Guest Blogger Kathleen Leslie on Why rootED...

Kathleen provides OUTSOURCED LEGAL SERVICES to rootED clients. Let’s hear from her today.

When I first read the mission of rootED, I was struck by its convergence of values with my own. I’ve worked in law for over twenty-five years and in the non-profit sector for over ten years. In that time, I’ve seen the perceived conflict between “doing good” and “best practices” collide in the minds of executives, attorneys, on-the-ground service providers and administrators. Granted, there are real tensions between the two principles at times, though less often than it may seem, and the existence of that tension is a good thing, a tension to be managed. However, so often these tensions are larger and more obstructive than they need to be. I’ve seen almost-seamless marriages of these principles and environments where they are completely divorced from each other, causing minor disruption to existential crisis.

As a non-profit executive in the HR and human capital sector, a general counsel, and a mentor for young leaders, I see a great need to fill the gap for non-profits who desire to see their missions have great practical impact but need assistance in uncovering potential legal issues by asking questions, interrogating the process and the product, to ensure best legal practices are followed for the good of the organization, its most important assets—staff and volunteers, and those the organization seeks to serve.

That is why I was so intrigued by rootED’s emphasis on asking questions. I want to assist organizations become rooted, or more deeply rooted, in being deep and thoughtful inquisitors of the current climate in which they exist. I often find, in counseling nonprofit clients, that so many questions go unasked, and if those questions had been asked, in a spirit of learning and improvement, many risks could have been avoided or at least mitigated. I want to help your organization ask those questions and develop solutions to legal issues quickly and with as little disruption to the day-to-day operations and strategy of your organization.

Your organization has a vital role in Baltimore and beyond. Thank you for being a part of solutions in our society. May rootED bless your organization.
